In the world of luxury, every detail matters. Personalization is no longer a simple addition, but a true extension of the customer experience. Engraved initials, symbolic dates, custom designs… the quality of engraving becomes a key element in how the product is perceived.
But not all techniques are equal.
Two technologies currently dominate the market: mechanical engraving and laser engraving.
So, which one is truly suited to the requirements of leading luxury brands?
What is mechanical engraving?
Mechanical engraving is based on a simple principle: a tip (cutter or diamond) physically engraves into the material.
Avantages :
- Tangible engraved recess
- A traditional technique, well mastered
- Suitable for certain metals
Limitations:
- Lack of precision for complex details
- Limited to only a few materials
- Tool wear → variation in quality and requires consumables
- Physical contact with the product → risk of micro-scratches and breakage on glass
- Limited flexibility for modern designs or real-time personalization
In a premium retail context, these limitations quickly become a constraint.
What is laser engraving?
Laser engraving uses an extremely precise beam of light to mark or transform the surface of a material without compromising the integrity of the product.
Major advantages:
- Extreme precision (micro-details, fine typography, exceptional designs)
- No deformation of the product (contactless process)
- Consistent, long-lasting quality, with no tool wear
- Fast execution → ideal for in-store and e-commerce
- Ability to engrave on complex areas
- Suitable for a wide variety of materials (glass, crystal, leather, paper, metal, wood…)
Why is laser becoming essential in the luxury sector?
Major brands are not just looking for a marking technique. They are looking for:
- Impeccable quality
- A memorable in-store customer experience
- Perfect alignment with their brand image
Laser engraving meets these three challenges. It allows, for example:
- To engrave live in-store (instant “wow” effect)
- To offer ultra-precise personalization
- To integrate complex designs (illustrations, logos, patterns, symbols, QR codes…)

Entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds
Samuel Desprez and I met on the benches of HEC — not as students, but as leaders of innovative companies. About ten years earlier, Samuel had founded G.D. Laser, specialized in laser engraving and decorative laser applications for the perfumery and cosmetics sectors, as well as for packaging manufacturers working with glass, cardboard, foam, plastic, leather, and more.
As for me, after completing my PhD, I co‑founded SourceLAB, a pioneer in laser–plasma particle accelerators — essentially, a way to revolutionize the world of research and countless applications by replacing massive synchrotrons with tabletop particle accelerators that are 100 to 1,000 times less expensive. In terms of the laser technologies we worked with, Samuel and I were at opposite ends of the spectrum (some will catch the pun :)).
A Passion for High Technology and Luxury
The laser is a remarkable tool, but how can we make it accessible to everyone — all the way to the point of sale, to to offer each person a unique experienceThe pleasure of engraving your emotions onto your favorite product? That’s the challenge that sparked our collaboration. Samuel had the talent and the brands’ trust, and I brought the international experience and project engineering needed to kick off the adventure.
DWS was born from this shared desire to create a premium personalization offering through laser engraving in the service of major brands the luxury industry.
